MWM 2014: A successful launch!

The official opening of the 2014 MWM of CIOR and CIOMR at NATO Headquarters in Brussels was marked by excellence.

Two outstanding speakers, General Philip M. Breedlove, Supreme Allied Commander Europe (SACEUR), and US Europe Commander (EUCOM), and Mr. Pieter De Crem, Belgium Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defense, took turns in stressing the more and more crucial part played by reservists –both officers and NCOs- in modern armed forces, before answering a series of questions from the floor, thus giving this year a higher visibility to the event.

In his speech, General Philip M. Breedlove reminded the audience of the prominent role played by CIOR in the field of cooperation, especially for exercises, training and education, referring to the achievements of CIOR various committees (Military Competition (MILCOMP), Civil-Military Exercise (CIMEX), Partnership for Peace & Outreach (Pfp&O)…).

Mr. Pieter De Crem, for his part, insisted on the active part played by reservists in today’s armed forces, particularly in the medical field. He reaffirmed the necessity to enhance cooperation in defense matters at all levels, between the Allies and all their partners. He also emphasized the importance of the Transatlantic Link and the values shared by all CIOR member countries, while stressing that it was paramount for the EU, as a key partner of NATO, to give priority to the rebalancing of roles within the Alliance.

Both speakers then engaged in a dialogue with the floor and answered with commitment and stamina the questions asked particularly by the young reserve officers for over 45 minutes.

The afternoon was devoted to the agenda of CIOR various committees and working groups, as a prelude to two days of intense work at NATO HQ.
