Summer Congress news

Reserve officers’ Symposium : Reservists invaluable in crisis management situations

The third CIOR/NRFC congress day was dominated by its Symposium: “Prepared for Crisis Management Operations – Education, Training and Exercise with Reservists”. Reserve soldiers, often quoted to be “twice a professional”, provide a better understanding of complex environments, ease the interaction between the military and the civilian domain, blend cultures and help stakeholders find the appropriate way to solve problems in the field as well as at staff level.
On these grounds, the topic of this year’s Symposium is more relevant than ever, as it deals with addressing the best ways to educate and train reservists to ensure they are able to deploy their particular skills in challenging crisis environments.

Besides taking part in various workshops during the day, congress participants had the opportunity to observe the performance of CIOR athletes in a Military Pentathlon at the German Army Infantry School in Hammelburg, Bavaria. In the obstacle course discipline the team “Finland 2” was first – the only team which conquered the course in less than 3 minutes. In overall ranking the Finnish team is now just behind the leading team “Germany 3”.

Welcome Ceremony

The participants of the Summer Congress of the International Reserve Officers Association CIOR have been welcomed in Fulda at a formal reception hosted jointly by the Federal Ministry of Defence and the Association of Reservists. In the presence of 500 international guests, Markus Grübel, Parliamentary State Secretary to the Minister of Defence, pointed out the importance of the reserve for the armed forces: “Last year flood disaster clearly demonstrated how important the support from reserve is for active armed forces.”
Colonel (R) Roderich Kiesewetter, Member of German Parliament and President of the Association of Reservists, welcomed the guests. “If we look around, we can see that international reservists’s work matters : both men and women from more than 25 nations, of which some were enemies only 30 years ago, stand peacefully together and work for our common future.” With a celebratory serenade, performed open-air by the German Army Band Hannover,
the third day of the CIOR Congress in Fulda, Hesse ended.
