CIOR President met with Estonian Military Representative in NATO to discuses NATO's new Reserve Forces Policy

Lt Mari Uuemaa, CIOR ASG org 19.05.2024
Change in the geopolitical environment and NATO adopting a new Strategic Concept in 2022 has also led to the revision of NATO’s Policy on Reserve Forces and Reservists. CIOR and its sister organisations: The Interallied Confederation of Medical Reserve Officers (CIOMR) and The Interallied Confederation of Reserve Non-Commissioned Officers (CISOR), welcome the Military Committees (MC) initiative of revising NATO’s approach and policy on Reserve Forces and Reservists and are fully committed to support International Military Staff (IMS) in this process. A project group (Tiger Team) was established to develop a new policy with International Military Staff (IMS) in lead, supported by the National Reserve Forces Committee (NRFC) and the CIOR.

The President of CIOR, Lieutenant Colonel Toomas Luman met with the Estonian Military Representative Major General Indrek Sirel to discuss the process and gather support. The President introduced CIOR’s positions and emphasized the need for reservists' voices to be heard and considered in this process.

“A whole-of-society approach is fundamental to developing strong Reserve Forces, and CIOR advocates for this to be reflected in new policies. Resilient societies and the willingness of their citizens to defend their values and sovereignty by becoming reservists are what keep the Euro-Atlantic area secure.” he said. “The three Interallied Confederations are third sector Nation’s reservists’ representatives serving as conduits for a whole-of-society approach including attitudes and trends that prevail in civil societies, particularly concerning reserve matters that might affect the wider national and international military decision-making.” he added.

In addition to CIOR President participating in the Tiger Team that drives the policy’s strategic development, CIOR Assistant Secretary General LT SG Mari Uuemaa also contributes to the writing team that drafts the policy’s tangible text. Several surveys have been conducted in CIOR member nations by the member associations to gather information that could be used in the writing team in the policy development process.
